Museum presents 'Pioneer Lady' tribute

There were many excellent photos entered into the Douglas County Historical Society's February photo contest, but our judges picked Candy Stewart's "Momma and Baby" as the winner. Congratulations to Candy. Come see the actual calendar page at the front desk at the museum.

Several other photos were also chosen to be featured on one-of-a-kind note cards in our Main Street Bookstore. Come in a see if your photo is one of them.

We also had a winner for our history question. We asked who was the first licensed female doctor in Nevada and John Smith of Minden knew that it was Dr. Eliza Cook.  Congratulations, John. We'll ask another question right here next week.

This Saturday is our Student-Senior Day presentation of the reading play, "Portrait of a Pioneer Lady," at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The original cast will be back together for these performances. We will also show last year's video of the interview with Bea Fettic Jones, one of the writers of the play. Bea passed away recently, but will always be remembered for her volunteer efforts for the historical society.

We hope you entered your nominee for this year's Women in History project. Our committee will review all nominees and present those chosen at a reception to be held at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville on Saturday, March 20, in the main gallery. This reception will be open to the public so all may honor our Douglas County Women in History.

Even though the Winter Olympics are over, don't miss the exhibit of Olympic pins and memorabilia. The collection is in the museum's changing exhibit room for a short time only. The Rev. Bill Baltz of Christ Presbyterian Church in Gardnerville has graciously allowed us to exhibit his extensive collection.

Coming up on Thursday, March 11, is our lecture series. This month we will feature State Archivist Jeff Kintop who will discuss his research and findings during a lecture entitled, "Where the Heck is Old Mormon Station?" It seems the original Mormon Station may well have been exactly where the current Mormon Station State Historic Park is in Genoa. Come find out 7 p.m. Thursday.

Now is the time to start planning what you think of in March and get your camera ready to take that winning shot for the March photo contest. Photos are due by 4 p.m. March 31.

For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
