Historical society adds new contest

We at Douglas County Historical Society are starting a new contest for our readers, beginning in this column Feb. 26 and running twice a month for the next fewmonths. This is in addition to the monthly photo contest which will continue. On the second and fourth Fridays of the month we will ask a question in this column about something found in the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center. To enter the contest, go to the museum to find the answer. Give the answer to the volunteer at the main desk. The first person to give the correct answer wins the prize. You must go to the museum in person and no phone calls please. Everyone can enter, except DCHS employees and board members.

While at the museum, enjoy the exhibits. Check out our Main Street Bookstore. Get a list of upcoming events. Then consider a membership to save on events and in our bookstore while helping your museum preserve the history of the Valley. Memberships make great gifts for friends.

Enter the February photo contest by Feb. 27. Photos need to be of something in Douglas County in February. Entries can be taken to the Gardnerville museum or e-mailed to the address below.

Thursday is Main Street Gardnerville's Let's Whine About Winter wine walk. Register 4:30-7:30 p.m. inside the Gardnerville museum. This fun event is a great time to check out the museum while enjoying a walk around town. Dress warmly and bring a flash light.

Have you nominated your favorite woman for our Women in History award? We plan to honor six women who have made a significant contribution to the quality of life in Douglas County during their lifetime. Stop in or call 782-2555 or Helen Chappell at 782-2643 for more information and a nominating packet. The deadline for entries is March 5 and the reception honoring these women will be on Saturday, March 20.

Student-Senior Day on March 6 features two special performances of "Portrait of a Pioneer Lady," a recorded conversation between Carson Valley founders Georgie Beeding Dangberg, Gene Fettic and Beatrice Fettic Jones, daughter of Gene. The characters talk about life in our valley between 1851 and the 1890s. Mrs. Jones recently passed away at 100 years of age. The play will be given in memory of her.

For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
