Vote for favorite trees in museum contest

Thanks to everyone who braved the rainy weather last Saturday and came out to the annual Holiday Gala. We probably had 400 people through the museum seeing the trees, the gingerbread houses, visiting Santa and buying cookies. This was the best year ever for the Gala and we at Douglas County Historical Society thank you so much for supporting us.

Congratulations to Diana Vestal of Minden who won the raffle for the oil painting of "The Mustangs" by local artist Alice Cardelli Swett. Diana said she used to have horses so this painting brings back special memories for her.

We have Santa's sack full of things for the holiday. The Main Street Bookstore has its 20 percent off sale on stocking stuffers and Christmas presents. Also available are the second annual historic tree ornaments and our 2011 photo contest winners' calendar.

Another idea is to buy tickets to the "Rolling Down to Gardnerville" melodrama on Feb. 4-6, available in the Main Street Bookstore. Cost is $25 ($20 for DCHS members) for dinner performances and $15 ($10 for DCHS members) for the matinee. Call 782-2555 to order by credit card.

Visit the museum between now and Christmas to see the incredible gingerbread houses on display. One looks just like the Gardnerville museum.

Come vote for your favorite Christmas tree. There are traditional, unusual and just plain beautiful ones. It will be hard to decide which one you prefer, so bring a few extra dollars to vote for several. The winning tree with the most money votes will be announced after Christmas.

Come visit and enjoy our holiday spirit.

Information about the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help keep our doors open.
