Rash of vehicle break-ins in Ranchos

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents to lock their vehicles after more than two dozen vehicles were broken into early today in the Gardnerville Ranchos neighborhood of Manhattan Way and Tillman Lane.

Sgt. Jim Halsey said a Manhattan Way resident saw two people in dark clothing and hooded sweatshirts rifling his neighbor's vehicle about 1:15 a.m. and reported a vehicle burglary in progress to DCSO.

He yelled at the subjects who exited the vehicle and took off on foot, running toward Tillman. He chased after the two but did not catch up with them.

Halsey said deputies scoured the area on foot and in patrol cars but did not locate the suspects. They discovered 25 vehicles had been entered.

"All of the vehicles had been left unlocked by the owners," he said.

He said two owners reported losses, a pair of prescription sunglasses and a flashlight.

"Most of the vehicles had the glove box or center console left open, and the contents scattered about the vehicle," Halsey said.

Anyone caught and convicted of a vehicle burglary faces 1-10 years in prison, fines and restitution.

Secret Witness is offering a $250 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
