Food drive Dec. 6-10

The Douglas Disposal 16th annual food drive benefits the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. Information will be left on trash containers this week, letting customers know to place donations of nonperishable food items in plastic bags beside trash cans to be picked up by Douglas Disposal Dec. 6-10.

Donations may also be delivered to the Douglas Disposal office, 1653 Lucerne St., Suite A, in Minden Village. Information, 782-5713.


Gift bags for seniors

The Young At Heart Senior Citizens Club assembles Christmas gift bags for recipients of Meals-on-Wheels and Douglas County homebound seniors Dec. 10 at the Douglas County Senior Center.

Donations of small presents are needed: sample-sized shampoo, conditioner and hand lotion, lip balm, playing cards, games, candy, cans of nuts, washcloths, hand towels, socks, gloves, ornaments, sugar-free candy.

Youth helmet drive

Carson Valley Medical Center hosts a youth bike helmet drive to benefit Project Santa Claus through Dec. 13. Drop off new helmets for toddlers through teenagers in the hospital lobby at 1107 Highway 395, Gardnerville. Information, 782-1512.


Bikes needed

The Carson Valley Kiwanis Club seeks good quality used bicycles to be donated to Project Santa Claus. Drop off bikes at the Gardnerville Ranchos General Improvement District office at 931 Mitch Drive in the Ranchos or at the Town of Gardnerville maintenance yard at 1369 Highway 395, Gardnerville. Project Santa Claus Angel Trees

Sponsor a child in need for Christmas by picking an angel from one of the Project Santa Claus Angel Trees. Organizers said the list of angels will exceed last year's total of 786 children helped.

Return wrapped gifts to Angel Tree locations by Dec. 15. Information, Marilyn Malkmus, 782-4931.

Gardnerville Angel Tree locations are Carson Valley Medical Center, Raley's, Scolari's Food & Drug, Sharkey's Casino, Topaz Lodge & Casino, Wells Fargo Bank.

Minden locations are Bently Biofuels Outpost, Designing with Nature, Rite of Passage, Taylor-York Salon, Tumblewind, World Gym. 

Douglas County residents in need may sign up for Project Santa Claus during drop-in days: 1-4 p.m. Dec. 8, or 8:30-11 a.m. Dec. 9, at Douglas County Social Services, 1133 Spruce St., Minden. Application information available in the office or at 782-9825.


Turkeys needed at food closet

Make donations of turkeys and holiday food at the Carson Valley Community Food Closet, open 12:30 -4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 1255 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville, 782-3711.

Make cash donations to the food closet at Raley's checkout counters, through Scolari's Friendship Fund, or send to send Carson Valley Community Food Closet, P.O. Box 2911, Gardnerville, NV 89410.

The purchase of food bags at local markets including Scolari's and Raley's benefits the food closet.


Gift collection at Sugarplum

Deliver unwrapped gifts for seniors and children to Sugarplum Bakery & Treats and receive a coffee beverage and scone as a thank-you.

The bakery is a collection site for gifts to be donated to the senior gift drive and Project Santa Claus, and is located at 1629 Lucerne St., Suite C, in Minden Village. Information, 783-8828.
