The R-C Morning Report

Douglas County commissioners meet in Minden starting 1 p.m. today. Topics range from a report on funding the airport without federal funds, and a review of the motocross track to the increase of water rates for the West Valley Water System and a development agreement with Peri Enterprises for land near Pinenut Road. Commissioners meet in their chambers at 1616 Eighth St.

A special statement issued by the National Weather Service at 2:19 a.m. today is calling for winter storms to increase next week, with the jet stream bringing increased subtropical moisture into the area. Forecasters say there's still some uncertainty as to the exact timing of the storms, but the first one could arrive Sunday night or Monday, bringing snow levels down to the Valley floor. A second warmer storm is possible in the middle of the week.

It's that sort of one-two punch that occasionally leads to flooding in the Valley, with a cold storm dumping snow and then the warmer one raining on the snow and getting things all soppy. Or they could both do absolutely nothing. The weather service isn't placing any bets yet. My bet either way is that it will be very windy.

Today and Friday will be nice, though, with highs in the upper 40s under sunny skies. Tonight will see temperatures back down into the teens. Before dawn, it's 16 degrees in Minden, and 18 in Genoa.
