Museums gearing up for change of season events

This is your last chance to submit a photo for the 2010 calendar. The August contest closes 4 p.m. Monday. Tuesday we will choose a winner and take the whole calendar to the printer. So, take your best shot at what looks like August to you and get your photo in today. Winner announced here next week.

Next we'll open the September photo contest and look for a winner to start our 2011 calendar. What does September in Douglas County look like? You have a lot to choose from. There are kids back in school, local football games, farmers making one last alfalfa harvest, leaves starting to turn. Pick what means September to you and start our 2011 calendar off with your great photo.

Student-Senior Day is Sept. 5. Because the Gardnerville museum will be closed for the Labor Day holiday, this Student-Senior Day will be held at the Genoa Courthouse Museum. This is your chance to get out to Genoa and see that museum before it closes for the season in October.

The next lecture is Sept. 10 when Darin Talbot will be speaking about the history of the things we see when we drive around Tahoe. The lecture starts at 7 p.m. and is free for Douglas County Historical Society members, $3 for non-members. Come out and learn the history around our favorite lake.

Sept. 12, is the last of this summer's swap meets. The event starts at 8 a.m. and booth space is only $10. This is your last chance to shop, swap and enjoy.

Next comes the annual Candy Dance in Genoa. If you have never been, make this year your first time. If you have been, come on back again. The Genoa Courthouse Museum will be open for you to take a refreshing break from the crowds. Stop in and learn what the history of the Candy Dance is all about.

Once we get into October, we will participate in the Haunted Weekend events. There will be a Haunted Minden, a Haunted Gardnerville, a Haunted Genoa and a Haunted Genoa Cemetery. That's one daytime and three evening events for you to attend and learn all about the local history. We'll let you know as soon as tickets are available.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
