Watercolor workshop begins Thursday

The Carson Valley Art Association hosts a four-day watercolor workshop with Peter Darvas at the University of Nevada, Reno, Cooperative Extension office, 1329 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville.

Workshops are 9 a.m. to noon Thursday through Saturday with critique, noon to 3 p.m., Sunday. Cost is $100. Information, Vicky Kingman, 265-0320.


Big Mama needs sponsors

Vendors, sponsors and cars are needed for the ninth annual Big Mama's Show & Shine Classic Car Show in Lampe Park on May 9.

The event of crafts, food, music and classic cars is organized by Douglas County Senior Services as a fundraiser for the Meals On Wheels program that delivers meals to homebound seniors. This year it is expected that more than 29,000 meals will be delivered to Meals On Wheels clients in Douglas County.

To become a sponsor for the show, a craft fair vendor, to make raffle item donations or for applications for classic vehicles (1972 and older), contact Amanda Reid at Douglas County Senior Center, 783-6455.


Candy Dance crafter deadline extended

The Town of Genoa has extended the deadline for artisans and crafters to apply for the juried Candy Dance Arts and Crafts Faire on Sept. 26 and 27.

Applications will be accepted until booth space is filled. Event organizers are working to expand the number of quality, hand-crafted items at this year's fair.

Submit applications, non-refundable $15 application fee, photos and an essay documenting the processes used to make art and craft items. Applications and information at the Genoa Town Office, 782-8696 or www.genoanevada.org


Mother-son dance May 9

Show Mom how much you appreciate her by taking her out for an evening of dancing and entertainment at the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department's Mother/Son Dance, 6:30 to 9 p.m. May 9, at the fairgrounds building.

Cost for the semi-formal occasion is $15 per couple and $7 per addition son. Corsages for Mom and refreshments provided. Photos will be available for purchase.

This event is sponsored by the Carson Valley FFA. Spaces are limited. Register at the Parks & Recreation office, 1327 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville. Information, 782-9828.


Teachers, students honored 

The second annual Carson Valley teacher and student honor night is 7 p.m. May 9 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mahogany Drive, Minden.

Those recognized by students and receiving awards as Teacher of the Year for 2009 are Debbie Barnes, Douglas High School; Elizabeth Leiknes, Carson Valley Middle School; Shari Chappell, Minden Elementary; Peggy Tighe, Pinon Hills Elementary and Heather Kuehner, Jacks Valley Elementary. Becky Rugger, assistant principal at Douglas High School, will be awarded Outstanding Administrator of the Year.

Student honored at the event are Eric Guzman, Douglas High School senior Eric Guzman and Carson Valley Middle School ninth-grader April Sorenson.

Wine making class offered

Gardnerville wine maker Archie Reed teaches how to make wine beginning 7 p.m. May 12 at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension office, 1329 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville.

At least 6 participants are needed to sign up for the class. The five-week long course costs $275 and includes everything needed to make wine except the bottles. Classes are May 12, 19, 26, June 2 and 9.

The wine ingredient kit offers 12 choices of white and red wines. Expect to make 30 bottles of the wine of your choice and have the equipment and knowledge to make wine at home for $2 per bottle.
