About 45 people turned out to hear Professor Sally Zanjani talk about her book "Devils Will Reign: How Nevada Began" on Thursday night at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center. Zanjani is the granddaughter of Herman and Wilhelmine Springmeyer, who settled in the Carson Valley in the 19th Century.
On my way home from the talk I looked up and the hill above Genoa Lakes was lit up like a Christmas tree with emergency vehicle lights. Thinking that I had driven past a fire to get someplace, I zipped up the hill on Centennial and hiked into the scene, passing three fire engines with no one in them. When I came upon a knot of firefighters, laughing and joking in the night, I learned that they were conducting structure protection training and were wrapping up. That's what I get for not carrying a scanner.
The Washoe Zephyr will pick up today at about 11 a.m. with gusts of 18-21 mph and will arrive at about the same time on Saturday. The high today will climb into the 80s, but will reportedly be cooler over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
I will be on vacation next week, so Joey Crandall will be handling the morning report. I'll be back on May 22, bushy-eyed and bright-tailed and ready to tackle the big June blitz, featuring Magiko.
