ValleyVibrations

Lots of stuff to do this weekend, if you're willing to get out and lend an ear to hear local musicians. I might even hit a couple of spots if I can work it out.

Laurence Juber, former lead guitarist for Paul McCartney & Wings, will be the performer for the fifth fundraiser concert to benefit a Copeland Performing Arts Center in Minden.

Interestingly, I just watched a movie on TV the other day, "Give My Regards to Broad Street," all about Paul and Linda McCartney's life together until her death April 17, 1998, at the age of 56. We speculated about whether we thought The Beatles had given their permission for their portrayals, and we didn't think so. However, later I discovered that Paul actually wrote the screenplay.

The 1984 TV movie wasn't that great although it was nominated for a Golden Globe award. It couldn't help but be touching, especially once Linda discovered she had breast cancer and lymphoma.

But, my favorite part was when Paul asked her to be in a band with him.

"You're Paul McCartney," said the actress who played Linda. (I can't find her name on the Web.) "I'm not a musician. I don't play an instrument."

When he was teaching her to play the keyboard, with their newborn baby sitting next to them in a baby seat, she said, "I didn't even like piano lessons when I was little."

Later, when the first reviews panned her, "Linda" said, "I never wanted to do this to begin with."

Instead of discouraging, I found the movie encouraging. If Linda McCartney could do it, so can the rest of us. Right?

Until next week, keep on playin'!

Remember, to keep this going, I have to hear from you. Just a little e-mail (jrafferty@recordcourier.com) or a phone call (782-5121, ext. 210) or even a fax (782-6152) is all I need to put your musical entertainment information in this column at no charge to you. If you send it, I'll even try to get a photo in to go with it. Details are needed by noon on Wednesday.

So, with a "One, two - one, two, three, four":
