VFW voted top Caltrans volunteers

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3567 has been honored by California State Department of Transportation (Caltrans) with their award of "Volunteer of the Year" for the way they care for the section of Highway 395 that their group has "adopted." Congratulations for the hard work and good results.

Change of date

The Antelope Elementary School's Parent Teacher Organization has changed the date of their pancake breakfast and bazaar from this Saturday, April 28, to the following Saturday, May 5. The breakfast will be available after 8 a.m., and the bazaar will run until 2 p.m.

This also changed the date for the book sale being held at the bazaar by the Antelope Valley Friends of the Library, so be sure to re-mark your calendar for this great sale.

Busy weekend

Remember the busy weekend of May 18, 19 and 20. The Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce will hold a "carbo-load" spaghetti dinner Friday evening, with the 5th Annual Walker Spring Fling Saturday and Sunday. Also on Saturday will be the Mountain Warfare 10k Challenge Race at Pickel Meadows. There's sure going to be a lot of very tired people on Monday morning.

Local restaurants

As of this time, the operating hours for these local businesses are as follows:

-- Sierra Retreat Pizza Parlor will open today at 4 p.m. They will be open Wednesday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

-- Mountain View Barbecue will begin serving lunch and dinner on May 3. They will be open Thursday through Monday, with only lunch served on Monday. You can call (530) 495-2107 to confirm times.

-- Walker Burger opened last Thursday, and they will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. They will be open every day except Wednesday, and after Memorial Day their hours will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

-- Meadowcliff Restaurant is open every day for breakfast and lunch, and they will be open for dinner hours during the summer season.

This and that

-- I made a mistake on one of the clubs' meeting dates in last week's column. The Antelope Valley Women's Club meets the first and third Thursdays, 1 p.m. at the Walker Community Center.

-- Relay for Life is coming again with their wonderful event to raise funds to fight cancer. The actual relay will be August 4 at Lampe Park in Gardnerville, but the local team will have a booth at the Spring Fling. They will have a raffle and answer any questions from you about the event, as well as encouraging additional volunteers for the relay.

-- Opening day of trout season is finally here on Saturday. Get your licenses and go out and enjoy the beautiful West Walker River. Good luck to all the anglers (including my husband)
