4-H show a success

Editor:

The 4-H Happy Heelers Dog Club had a dog show on March 31 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The show was a great success. We had a good turn-out with people coming to participate from as far away as Winnemucca.

Everyone that showed from our club did a wonderful job. Our Cloverbuds, Breanna Ross-Dee, Olivia Ross-Dee and Sammy Cota all won ribbons for showmanship. Alana Antunovich, Brandi Freisen, Becky Glocknitzer, Leah Withrow and Mark Wright all received blue ribbons in showmanship. Amber Freisen also received a blue ribbon in showmanship and was high in trial junior for obedience. Sarah Owens received best junior handler, best in group and best in match. Leah Withrow also received a blue ribbon for our costume contest and blue for mixed breed conformation. All of our members who participated did a wonderful job.

Everyone who attended had a great time and they enjoyed our fun classes with the costumes and trick contests.

We want to thank Papa Murphy's Pizza for coming and providing us with their delicious pizza. Everyone enjoys that. We want to thank all those who donated to our raffle and to those who helped put on the show. We also want to acknowledge our leader, Noelle Cota, for all her patience and knowledge to help our kids to accomplish what they have. A big thanks to our co-leaders Annaliese Foster, Judy Dreyer and Deb Marks for all of their hard work and help too. A good time was had by all and we hope to put on a great show next year. 4-H is a youth development program of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.

Thanks from Kids & Horses

Kids & Horses Therapeutic Riding Center is happy to announce their bowling fundraiser on Feb. 25 was a huge success. For the past two years Lonnie Connor of Carson City has created and initiated the event. Lonnie spent numerous volunteer hours getting raffle items donated, and organizing the event. It raised approximately $1,050. Without Lonnie's hard work and dedication this outcome would not have been possible.

Kids & Horses would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to the bowling fundraiser. Our program, which benefits so many of our friends with physical, mental and emotional disabilities, cannot be advantageous without these successful fundraisers.

We would also like to thank the businesses and companies who were extremely generous with their donations: Gold Dust West, Casino Fandango, Albertsons, Applebee's, Raley's, Safeway, Carson Horseshoe Club, Slot World, Red's Old 395 Grill, Wal-Mart, Campagni's Dealership, Grandma Hattie's and Incline Bowl.

Thanks to all the sponsors for all their generosity.

Kids & Horses provides therapeutic horseback riding to special needs children and adults. Volunteers with horse experience are needed to assist with lessons and horse care. Please call 267-1775.

Martial Arts Expo thanks community

Last week's Martial Arts Expo III proved once again what a fantastic community we live in. MAE was designed to bring all martial arts schools together for a day of friendly competition, learning and to raise money for local charities in the process. That was more than accomplished, and we thank the members of our community for their support. A total of $500 was raised for the Carson Valley Children's Center (Austin's House).

We'd also like to specifically thank members of the martial arts community who gave of their time to make the expo run smoothly, some coming from as far away as Reno and the Bay area: Master Toby Cooling, Grandmaster Alexander Archie, Soke Dave McNeill, Master Glenn Ristine, Master Ross Briggs, Sensei Mark Ramsey, Sensei Denise Ramsey, Sensei Marta Azzam, Sensei Jim Rodriguez, Sensei Craig Black, Sensei James Painter, Mr. Richard Lee, Sensei Sean Morey, Sensei Tom Sanson, the teen/adult class at Sierra Dojo, Felicia Patterson, Lisa Cobourn, Emma Duarte, Jen and Meghan Motti, Byron Waite and Jay Bigelow. Also to the folks at Douglas County Parks & Recreation for their support in making this event a reality and Casey the Crocodile for making the kids smile.

The kids, teens and adults who choose martial arts as a sport or way of life don't always get recognized for their dedication. The athletes who competed on March 17 certainly demonstrated that good sportsmanship, honor, and fortitude are indeed their way of life.

We are already making plans for the next expo on Oct. 20, and are looking to expand events and involve as many martial arts schools as possible. If you would like to be on the mailing list or volunteer to help, call 782-1127.
