JV/Frosh roundup: soccer tops South Tahoe

The Douglas junior varsity boys' soccer team picked up its first victory over South Tahoe in about five years with a 4-3 win Saturday.

Jeff Crozier had two goals, David Heine scored once and Cole Cline added another as the Tigers' came back from a 3-2 deficit for the win.

Corbin Zumpft had a solid game in net, fending off the Viking offense when he had to.

JV GIRLS' SOCCER

Douglas avenged a close loss last month with a 4-2 win over South Tahoe Saturday.

Douglas scored in the first 10 minutes after Sam Ensminger brought the ball up the field from the left defensive position and sent a long pass to Ashley Hill at right forward.

Hill used one touch and put it in the net.

The Vikings passed a ball back to their goalie later in the first half, but the ball skipped over her fingers and into the net, putting the Tigers up 2-0.

Early in the second half, Breanna Norvell launched a corner kick and Sage Lyons received it. Lyons passed it back to Norvell who put the ball in to CJ Baumgartner. Baumgartner made a short pass to Hill, who crossed it to an open Amanda Ferraro, who punched it in for the 3-0 lead.

South Tahoe did not score until only seven minutes remained in the game, and that came on a direct kick from 26 yards out just over the goalie's fingertips.

The Tigers immediately responded as Baumgartner had a breakaway and dribbled around the goalie and into the net for an easy score.

South Tahoe scored once more with 30 seconds left on another free kick.

Goalie Cami Arend had five saves for Douglas and Allie Bowen stopped the Vikings' only close shot on goal in the first half.

The defense of Ensminger, Shelby Eisele, Kelsey Conklin, Sarah Owens and Clara Ritger was again outstanding.

The Tigers upped their season record to 9-3.

FRESHMAN FOOTBALL

Douglas had Hug all but beat, but two late tough breaks cost the Tigers the game in a 27-35 heartbreaker.

Douglas built a 25-13 lead with five minutes remaining in the game behind the strong running of Cody Spates and Johnny Pollack.

Pollack had one incredible run on a third-and-23 in the third quarter. He broke three tackles, got out into open space and got stopped three yards short of the first down by at least three Hawk defenders. He found the first-down marker and pushed the pile an additional six yards to pick up the first down.

Hug had the ball with 4:30 left and attempted a long pass which safety Michael Whalin appeared to tip, breaking it up. The Hug receiver, however, raced around behind Wahlin, caught the ball and took it in for the touchdown.

Douglas bobbled a punt attempt at its own 1-yard line on the next drive with three minutes left and Hug was awarded the ball.

The Tigers stuffed the Hug on the next two plays before the Hawks broke outside for the game-clinching score.
