Boys' Soccer: Douglas shuts out Hug

The Douglas High boys soccer team strengthened its hold on second place with a 3-0 win at Hug on Wednesday.

With South Tahoe losing to Carson 1-0, the Tigers extended their lead over the Vikings for second. Douglas (13-3) improved to 7-2 in the Sierra League while South Tahoe fell to 5-2-2).

Douglas will play at Reno High while Carson (7-0-2) will play at Wooster on Saturday. The two schools will then face each other in a showdown at 7 p.m. Monday at Douglas.

The Tigers opened the scoring against Hug on Andrew Andraski's throw-in from the corner. His throw-in went behind the goalie and Edgar Arceo slipped behind to head the ball back in. While Arceo's body was out of bounds, the ball was still in bounds.

Eddie Vega took Arceo's header and headed the ball in, so in effect, Douglas scored on a "doubleheader."

Douglas took a 2-0 lead at halftime when Robbie Forest sent a corner kick to Kyle Gardner, who was outside the goal box. Gardner headed the ball to Ray Kaffer, who took the ball while it was still in the air and kicked it in. The Tigers' final score came when Arceo took Eddie Vega's free kick and headed it in.

Jose Alcaraz moved back to goalie and made four saves to post the shutout.

Defenders Brian Randall, Austin Shick and Geoff Rahe helped post the shutout and Forest and Ross Gardner played well at midfield.
