Girls' Soccer: South Tahoe upends Douglas

The South Tahoe girls' soccer team put the wraps on an undefeated season Tuesday night while ending Douglas High's 17-game unbeaten streak at home in the same stroke.

The Vikings rode two second half goals to a 2-0 win in Minden to spoil the Tigers' senior night.

Neither team could mount much of an attack in the first half, but South Tahoe put together a number of nice scoring opportunities including a breakaway in the 10th minute where Tess Braun got loose on the outside but chipped the shot just too high from 10 yards out.

Three minutes later, Braun sent a through ball to Morgan Cook, who put a shot on net but Douglas keeper Jamie Greer came up with one of her three saves on the night on the shot.

The Vikings had a corner kick trickle through in front of the net in the 15th minute, but the rest of the half was rather devoid of any action until the 33rd minute when Cassidy Berg got loose on a 1-on-1 break against Greer. Greer charged on the ball and chipped it away before Berg could get a shot off.

Early on in the second half, South Tahoe got on the board when Karli Vath dropped a ball through the Tiger defense and Sarah Burk caught up with it and booted the ball into the top of the net for the 1-0 lead 46 minutes in.

The Vikings nearly made it 2-0 after the ensuing kickoff when Braun broke free up the middle, but sent an open shot too high.

South Tahoe's strong midfield clogged up the center of the field and kept the Tigers from getting any kind of continuity going between its defense and its forwards.

Douglas didn't actually get a promising scoring chance until the 53rd minute of the game when Samantha Ensminger put a throw-in through the Viking defense and Ally Freitas sent a shot high.

From there, the Tigers strung a couple of nice opportunities together, including a corner kick in the 63rd minute that Alexandra Laing played to the far post, but the ensuing shot was knocked over the cross bar.

Laing also sent a shot wide to the far post from 15 yards out two minutes later. Breanna Norvell had Douglas' best remaining chance in the 68th minute when she bent a shot in from 20 yards away only to have it knocked away by Tahoe's Candace Prescott.

Tahoe came down the field one minute later and sealed the game when Vath sent a sharp shot to the open upper corner for the 2-0 lead.

The Vikings finished with a 7-5 advantage in shots.
