Storm warning begins 4 p.m. today

A 24-hour winter storm warning was issued this morning by the National Weather Service for western Nevada beginning at 4 p.m. today.

Forecasters are predicting heavy snow and gusty winds in the Sierra this afternoon, spreading into Nevada by tonight.

According to the Weather Service, a strong storm in the Gulf of Alaska will reach the northern Sierra this afternoon. A cold front associated with this storm will pass through western Nevada on Tuesday night and Wednesday. Snow and gusty winds up to 50 mph or faster will occur over much of the region through Wednesday.

The weather service is warning travelers to be prepared for hazardous winter weather conditions.

Forecasters say the snow won't begin to fall in the Valley's until after nightfall and will continue on Wednesday. Total snow accumulations are expected to be 2-6 inches in the Valley with 6-12 inches accumulating above 5,000 feet.

Carson Valley weather watchers reported between 5 and 8 inches of snow fell in the Valley during the weekend.

Minden weather watcher Stan Kapler said he measured 5 inches of snow in the Valley.

Sheridan Acres weather watcher George Uebele reported 8 inches of snow in the foothills, wich a wind gust on Saturday that hit 72 mph.
