The Morning R-C

Douglas High students will kick off their first day back with a test. Can they navigate the roundabout? We'll have a news team on the scene to proctor the test. School starts at 7:45 a.m., which means the students will be sharing the road with state workers and other commuters this morning. School administrators are asking students to take Mahogany to get on campus, as the Highway 88 entrance to the parking lot is pretty close to the roundabout and will be a formula for disaster. Remember right turns only.

A red flag fire warning goes into effect noon Tuesday as a weak low pressure system brings gusty winds and low humidity to Carson Valley. Today's weather will be sunny with temperatures above 90. The lows are in the 40s. Temperatures are expected to dip into the low 80s through the week, according to the National Weather Service.

Those of us who are allergic are well aware that Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, better known as yellow rabbitbrush, is in bloom.

The plant has yellow flowers and is the vegetative equivalent of battery acid to sufferers.

Our version tends to bloom in mid-August and will keep on pumping pollen into the atmosphere until the first hard freeze. That means the one that kills the tomatoes probably won't do the trick. So stock up on allergy pills for the next month or so and know you're not alone.
