Genoa, Nev. — The shooting death in Genoa on Thursday afternoon was reportedly self-inflicted. The mortuary was called in about two hours after it occurred and a chaplain after that. Sheriff’s investigators wrapped up at the scene around 5 p.m. Our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.

To be clear, it’s not my place to determine cause of death. I’ve reached out to the Sheriff’s Office to confirm, but even the professionals often have to wait for a proper autopsy to be conducted before they can say definitively.

True to form, I got at least two phone calls asking what was happening, since there was a significant law enforcement presence at the scene and Jacks Valley Road is pretty busy most afternoons. I told someone a bus at the scene might have been forensics, but to be honest I was guessing.

Not much on the calendar for the three-day long New Year’s Eve, which starts for The R-C at noon today. That’s my way of saying we’re going to be closed this afternoon.

I skipped the morning report on Christmas Day, as much because there wasn't much to report as the holiday. I expect to file on New Year's Day, since I anticipate this weekend will be a little more, shall we say, newsworthy.

Please, if you're going out for New Year's Eve, designate a driver or call for a ride. If you imbibe, don't drive for the sake of yourself, your friends and family and the rest of us who use the roads.

There’s rain in the forecast, but it won’t arrive until early Saturday morning. The snow level is forecast to remain between 6,000 and 6,300 feet through 4 p.m. Saturday, so it might be a little sketchy over the passes. There might be a little snow on Sunday.

It’s forecast to be a balmy 57 degrees today with the wind picking up at 5-10 mph out of the south this afternoon. We could see gusts of up to 20 mph.
