Clifford Joy won the moustache category during the 2023 Carson Valley Days beard contest. He was one of four found dead from fentanyl in South Lake Tahoe in February.

The third Carson Valley Days beard competition will be conducted in memory of Clifford Joy.

The competition is hosted by Taylor’s Scissors and Clippers 2:30-4 p.m. June 8 on the stage at Lampe Park.

Joy and his brother Adam died of fentanyl poisoning that was discovered on Feb. 11 in South Lake Tahoe. The overdose also claimed Abraham Lemus and Keely Pereira in one of the largest single death tolls attributed to the opiate regionally.

Clifford Joy won the moustache category during the 2023 Carson Valley Days beard contest and was a regular client at Taylor’s Scissors and Clippers.

“Cliff was a loyal client of mine for over three years and he was amazing and sweet,” said Taylor’s Scissors and Clippers owner Taylor Lynch. “He had a killer mustache, and he loved his hair.”

In Joy’s memory, Lynch plans to honor him with a raffle basket during the mustache category of the competition and donate the funds to his family.

“He and his brother are surely missed,” said Lynch. “He wasn’t just a great client and friend, but a husband, father, son, and brother. So, I wanted to do something in his honor and in support of his family.”

The raffle basket is loaded with a beard kit, a gift card for basic detailing from Chris Mueller Auto, Wine from Sonoma County, a free hair cut from Taylor, a $100 gift card for Crysis Cake Scene, and more.

Raffle tickets and beard competitor wrist bands can be purchased at Taylor’s Scissors and Clippers prior to Carson Valley Days or June 8 at Lampe Park in “Tay’s Beard Booth” by 1 p.m. Raffle tickets are $20 for 5 tickets or $5 per ticket and beard registration is $10 per person.

Lynch brought the beard competition back to the Carson Valley Days in 2022 after a several year hiatus. She said people attend from all over Reno, Virginia City, and surrounding areas.

“Everyone has loved it since its return,” said Lynch. “Many have told me they have favorite categories. The best beard strut is a popular one everyone loves.”

Beard enthusiasts can enter the competition in 11 categories: the most unique, the reddest beard, the best partial, the best salt and pepper, the best mustache, the whitest beard, the best groomed, the longest, the thickest, the most scruffy, and the best beard strut.

This year’s beard competition will be judged by The Record-Courier’s Associate Publisher Tara Addeo, Atom Knowles of the mental health organization The Altruistic American, and Ciprianis owner Nick Fontanez.

“I’m so excited and looking forward to this year’s competition and Carson Valley Days,” said Lynch. “It’s always a good time.”
