Wet storm could result in open burning

This fall’s first forecast storm might bring more than precipitation on Friday and Saturday.

It might also result in the opening of backyard burning in the East Fork Fire Protection District.

A strong cold front is forecast to arrive in the Sierra and Western Nevada on Friday.

There is a chance of rain and snow showers with the storm, which will be a welcome change from the more than two months of dry weather.

But before any moisture arrives, winds will pick up tonight and into Friday morning, bringing blowing dust and choppy lake conditions.

Forecasters say a couple of inches of snow could fall above 6,000 feet in the Sierra, with light snow showers over the weekend. Another shot of snow on Sunday could drop to the Valley floor.

Should the Valley receive some moisture, East Fork Fire Marshal Amy Ray said permits will be available at the stations and online starting today, but burning won’t be permitted until Monday.

“We are hoping to get the reported moisture this weekend so it becomes safe to burn,” she said.

Should the weather cooperate, burn season will be open through Dec. 27. A permit is required to burn and burners are required to call the district’s burn line to determine if it’s safe.

Burning may start at 7 a.m. and go until 3:30 p.m.
