Fallon track and field aims for regional crown, multiple state berths

The road to Vegas begins this weekend.

The many hours of braving the elements during offseason and regular-season workouts will be put to the test this weekend when teams from the Northern 3A – as well as the 1A and 2A – converge at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex for the regional track and field meet. The two-day meet begins at 2 p.m. on Friday and resumes Saturday when the top four finishers will advance to next week’s state meet at Desert Oasis High School in Las Vegas.

The Greenwave, while down on numbers, could shake up the competition and end up atop the league in the boys division. The girls have a tougher road to a regional title but are in position to dominate the field events.

Here’s how Fallon stacks up against the Northern 3A.

Sprints and distance

Senior Colton Peterson is the only sprinter in the Northern 3A to record a time under 11 seconds in the 100-meter dash. He leads the league in both the 100 and 200 with best times of 10.91 and 22.05. Sophomore Jonathan Cisneros sits in fourth at 11.53.

Also in the 200, junior Zeke Washington is in sixth at 23.66 – 0.52 seconds away from the fourth spot. Washington is sixth in the 400 at 53.64, which he clocked in at the Truckee meet last month, and is 0.14 seconds from the fourth-best mark. Fallon has no boys distance runners within qualifying reach.

For the girls, freshman Savanna Regli clocked in at 12:33.04 in the 3200 and is 18 seconds from the top four.

Hurdles

Senior Trevor East is second in the 110 hurdles at 15.95, which was clocked in last weekend and is 0.63 seconds from Fernley’s Nicholas Bernardo for first. Senior Reid Clyburn sits in sixth at 16.90 and needs to shave half a second to be in the top four. In the 300, though, Clyburn is second behind Bernardo (42.33 to 41.59).

Freshman McCartney McAlexander is third in the 100 hurdles at 17.37, which she achieved at Lowry on Saturday, and ninth in the 300 at 52.46, needing to finish under 50 seconds to be in the top four.

Relays

This year’s boys 4×100 team of East, Peterson, Clyburn and senior Angelo Vann is first at 43.87, which they recorded in last month’s Carson Invitational. The 4×200 team of Cisneros, East, Peterson and Tristen Mathisen is second and needs to shave 1.5 seconds for the top spot. The 4×400 team of Mathisen, Washington, Bryan Duenas and Jhadiel Robles is fourth at 3:44.03, which is 11 seconds from first.

The girls 4×100 relay team of Glenda Lee, Allie Lister, Tiffany Sorensen and Aisha Sharron recorded a 54.05 in the Conclave of Awesomeness in Fallon, which is fourth-best in the league. The 4x200 team of Lister, McAlexander, Makayle Mathisen and Sharron ran a 1:54.22 last weekend to sit in fourth. The 4×400 team of Zoey Brown, Jacilyn Cathey, Mathisen and McAlexander sits in fifth at 4:37.43 and needs to shave about a second to place in the top four.

Jumps

In the triple, East holds the top spot at 42-8.5, which he hit at Carson, followed by Duenas at 40-10.25 in third. Vann is seventh at 39-11 and Robles is eighth at 39-5.75.

East is third in the long jump at 20-4.25 followed by Robles at 20-1.5 and Cisneros at 19-8.25. Duenas is close by at 19-4.5. Vann needs to climb two more inches to reach the top four at 5-10 after matching his personal best last month at the Conclave.

Sharron leads the triple jump at 34-5.5 after hitting her personal best last weekend and also leads the long jump at 16-2, which she jumped two weeks ago. McAlexander is fourth in the triple at 31-3.5, which she recorded at Lowry, and Lister’s 29-11.5 is less than 2 feet from the top four. Sophomore Danyelle Andrews (14-11) and McAlexander (14-7.5) are within a foot from the top four in the long jump.

In the high jump, Sharron is in fourth at 5-even and needs 6 more inches to contend with first place. McAlexander is at 4-7, sophomore Hailey Guerrero is at 4-7 and senior Mayla Dahl jumped 4-6 last weekend.

Throws

In the shot put, freshman Madeline Stephens is third at 31-8.75 and needs 4 more feet to reach the top while Sorensen is fourth at 31-4. Sorensen is third in the discus at 110-9 and Stephens needs 12 feet for top-four status.

Pole vault

Lister, who broke the school record at 10 feet in March, is looking to climb higher as she sits in third behind Spring Creek’s Katelyn Anderson (11-3) and Truckee’s Natalie Lang-Ree (10-3). Lee is fifth at 9 feet, which she achieved last month, and needs 3 more inches to be in the top four. Freshman Michaella Simmons is seventh at 8-6.

Junior Morgan Lawry emerged for the boys with 10-foot jump last weekend but needs to vault another foot to be in the top four.
