Fallon duo wins regional tourney

Only one Greenwave entry in the regional tennis tournament managed to escape the opening round, and then do some more damage.

The pair of junior Brooklyn Whitaker and sophomore Allison Frost battled from losing the first set to win the next two in taking down the No. 1 seed to win the Class 3A Northern Region doubles championship Saturday in Truckee. The duo lost 6-0 to Truckee’s Lilah Abarno and Kira Collins in the first set of the championship but battled to win 6-2 and 6-4 to claim the trophy and qualify as the region’s No. 1 seed for this weekend’s state tournament in Truckee.

Whitaker and Frost, the No. 3 seed, cruised in the first two rounds with identical 6-0, 6-0 scores before defeating South Tahoe’s Alyx Carlson and Nicole Morgan, 6-4 and 6-2, to finish no worse than second and still qualify for state.

For the rest of the Greenwave, the team fought tough in the opening round, forcing tiebreakers in several sets.

Ashby Trotter lost to No. 7 Rachel Heath of Truckee in straight sets, 6-2 and 7-6(5), and P Donahue fell, 6-0 and 6-0, to the top seed, K Tong of Incline. Ashlynn Shults and Selenes Montes lost to Jaci Bates and Annebelle Walterscheid of Truckee, 6-1 and 6-3.

For the boys, Alex Perazzo, the seventh seed, lost in three sets with the first two going to a tiebreaker. He won the first one against Truckee’s Lucas Kraats, 7-6(1), but dropped the second, 7-6(4), and third, 6-3. Teammate Rian Smith dropped both sets, 6-0 and 6-0, to No. 2 Luke Sorter of Truckee.

Compton Lords and Ben Jamieson fell to No. 2 Quinn Proctor and Peter Sullivan of South Tahoe, 6-4 and 6-1, and Nathan Lords and Owen Palmer lost, 6-3 and 6-2, to No. 4 Jeremiah Dahl and Clyde Rypins, also of South Tahoe.
