Prep roundup: Carson girls fall to McQueen

McQueen used a 22-3 run over an eight-minute span in the second and third quarters to post an easy 53-24 win over Carson in a 4A crossover girls basketball game Friday night at Morse Burley Gym.

The loss dropped Carson to 1-5 in league play.

Carson turned the ball over 18 times, and the only thing that saved the Senators from an even bigger loss was McQueen only got 13 points off the mistakes. And, Carson had trouble finishing at the rim for the second straight game.

“We didn’t get back on defense and we didn’t take care of the ball,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “They are a good team.”

Carson led 10-8 with 6 minutes left in the first half, but the Lancer finished the first half with a 15-3 run to take a 23-13 lead at the break. Karla Spevak, who finished with 28 points, had 11 in that surge and Kendra McAninch had both of her baskets to complement Spevak.

McQueen opened the second half with a 10-2 run for a 33-15 lead. Izzy Warren started the surge with a three-point play and Spevak capped the surge with another 3-pointer.

Dajarrah Navarro led Carson with eight points, Haley Garver added six and Camryn Quilling had five.


Falcons edge Hawthorne

Grace Bonafede scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Sierra Lutheran to a 47-44 win over Hawthorne in a Division 1 game Friday night.

Clare Davison had 11 points and six assists, while Brynna Hansen finished with seven points and eight rebounds.

Reno 52, Douglas 18

The Reno Huskies scored 20 unanswered points over the final 6:43 of the first quarter and went onto post a 52-18 victory against Douglas at Randy Green Court.

Mikayla Shults scored nine of her game-high 16 points in the first quarter to lead Reno (5-1 High Desert League, 10-4 overall)

Douglas (2-4 Sierra League, 5-10 overall) had some bright spots in the second half. Karla Sanchez converted a three-point play and Hailey Hughes scored back-to-back layups, both off assists from Taylynn Kizer, in the third quarter. Sophomore Kevyn Reid added a 3-pointer, assisted by Madison Smalley, in the fourth quarter.

Carr led Douglas offensively with seven points.

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL

Reno 63, Douglas 58

MINDEN — A 34-point fourth quarter outburst lifted the Reno Huskies to a come-from-behind 63-58 Northern 4A boys basketball victory at Douglas on Friday night.

Tre Jackson scored a game-high 27 points for Douglas (2-4 Sierra League, 3-12 overall), 12 of which came in the third quarter when the Tigers led by as many as 17 points (37-20). The Tigers were on top 43-29 going to the fourth quarter.

Reno (4-2 High Desert League, 11-4 overall) charged back behind the hot hands of Chris Chamberlain and Drew Rippingham, who combined to score 23 points in the final period. Chamberlain scored 12, including three 3-pointers, and Rippingham added 11, with a pair of 3 balls.

Chamberlain finished the night with 20 points, while Rippingham had 13 and Tommy Challis 11.

Virginia City wins

SPARKS — Four Virginia City players scored in double figures as the Muckers rolled to a 65-30 win over Excel Christian. Colt Hess scored 17 points, Tanner Uken and Ireland Franklin each had 12 points and Tommy Redican added 10 points for Virgina City, which hosts Smith Valley at 5:30 p.m. today.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Senators edge Lancers

Carson evened its season record at 7-7 with a 54-49 win over McQueen.

Christian Ortega scored 11, Hunter Rauh chipped in nine and Lucas Van Brow added seven.

FRESHMAN BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson improves to 11-4

RENO — Carson held off a late McQueen surge to grab a 61-55 win Friday night.

Dougie Hosler had 11, and Bradley Maffei and Johnny LaPlante added nine each. Seth Griffith and Nate Smother each scored eight.
