Prep Roundup: Dayton baseball continues roll

DAYTON — Trevor Burrows threw 6.2 innings of shutout baseball and hit a three-run homer to lead the Dayton Dust Devils to an 8-0 win over Lowry and a sweep of their Northern 3A series Tuesday afternoon.

Dayton improved to 10-3 in league play and 13-3-1 overall. The Dust Devils, who have won nine straight, return to action Tuesday against South Tahoe at Greater Nevada Field at 7 p.m.

“Getting to 10 wins by our bye week is a big step toward securing a playoff spot,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “We know there is a lot of baseball left to be played, and we just need to continue to improve and most importantly stay healthy. Our bullpen did a nice job this series, and that is something that has plagued us in the past. We are going to need that kind of production if we are going to contend down the stretch.”

Dayton scored four in the second, three coming on Burrows’ homer. C.J. Wilhite drove in the other run.

The Dust Devils tacked on two more in the third, as Dylan Baker slugged a solo homer. Dayton added single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Douglas blanks Hug

MINDEN — Haydn Brown and Jeremy Aleman combined to pitch one-hit ball Tuesday afternoon as the Douglas High baseball team cruised to a 10-0 Northern 4A baseball win at home against Hug.

Douglas (7-3 league, 10-5 overall) scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back at Tiger Field in a game that was stopped in the fifth inning.

The win was the seventh in eight games for the Tigers, who are scheduled to open a two-game series at home against Reno on Thursday. The series concludes Saturday with a single game at Reno.

Brown allowed one hit with eight strikeouts and one walk over four innings. Aleman struck out the side in the fifth to complete the shutout.

SOFTBALL

Lowry blanks Dayton

DAYTON — The Dust Devils’ offense managed six hits and the defense had some costly mistakes in a 14-0 loss to Lowry on Monday afternoon.

Elizabeth Vincent was a bright spot offensively, going 3-for-3. Aleea Howe, Caleigh Onstott and Cassie Dickenson added a hit apiece.

Dayton returns to action next Tuesday against South Tahoe at a site to be determined.

GOLF

Carson 4th at Sierra meet

GENOA — Carson High finished fourth in the weekly Sierra League golf tournament at Genoa Lakes’ Ranch course on Tuesday afternoon.

Carson finished at 458. Galena won with 381 followed by Bishop Manogue at 397 and Damonte Ranch at 455.

Lakoda Smokey led Carson with an 84 followed by Bebop Martinez’s 90. Taylor Saarem shot 93, Ty Evans had a 95 and Zander Smokey 96.

Galena’s Presley Mackelburg was the medalist with a 2-over-par 74.

WRESTLING

Mersino places 5th

RENO — Carson High’s Nate Mersino placed fifth at the recently concluded Reno Worlds last weekend.

Mersino lost his first match and then battled back to win four straight to grab a medal.
