Prep roundup: CHS golf takes fourth

RENO — Carson High finished a distant fourth in Thursday’s Sierra League golf tournament at Wolf Run.

Galena won the tourney with 380 followed by Bishop Manogue 402, Damonte Ranch 442, Carson 479, Wooster 506 and Douglas 524.

“We certainly didn’t play as well as last week,” CHS coach Wade Greenlee said. “For the most part, all the scores were higher. It was windy and cold, and the guys kind of let the weather and course play them today instead of staying mentally focused and trying to grind out pars.

“We placed in the top four so our goal of reaching regionals is still on track. Bebop (Martinez) played well, and I’m confident the other guys will stay more focused this coming Monday when we host the tournament at Eagle Valley.”

Martinez shot 82 followed by Matt McCarthy at 91, Lakoda Smokey 98, Taylor Saarem 99, Ethan Lepire 109 and Ty Evans 124.

JV BASEBALL

Cougars tame Carson

Joe Tonino went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs, but it wasn’t near enough, as Carson dropped a 16-5 decision to Spanish Springs Thursday afternoon.

Ethan Good had a good day, too, going 2-for-2.

Bennett tames McQueen

RENO — Freshman Kettja Bennett pitched a complete game five-hitter to help lead the Douglas High softball team to a 5-2 victory against McQueen Thursday afternoon.

By winning, Douglas (9-10-1 overall, 5-5 league), moved into a tie with McQueen (5-5 league) in the Northern Division I standings.

Bennett finished with eight strikeouts with no walks and was supported by a defense that played errorless ball.

Shaena Robinson, Kylie Swan, Casey Peck and Mackenzie Brixey led Douglas offensively with two hits each. Robinson doubled twice.

VARSITY BASEBALL

Tigers upset Reed

MINDEN — Haden Keller and Spencer Trivitt went 3-for-4 to lead a 16-hit attack as Douglas rallied for a 12-8 Northern Division I win against Reed.

Trivitt and Keller combined to drive in five runs, with three of those RBI coming in the Tigers’ game-breaking sixth-inning rally.

Keller also pitched five innings to earn credit for the win.

Foster pitched the final two innings for his second save of the season.
