Local sports roundup: CHS edges Panthers

RENO — Carson High moved a game over .500 in Northern Division I play with a thrilling 4-3 win over North Valleys Tuesday afternoon.

Carson improved to 7-6 in league play, and will go for the two-game sweep Thursday at 6 at Ron McNutt Field. Bryce Moyle will be on the mound for CHS.

Kyle Krebs pitched six strong innings before turning the ball over to Cody Azevedo. Krebs allowed five hits and fanned nine, while Azevedo pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the save.

Krebs, besides throwing a great game, also went 3-for-4 at the plate and started the game-winning rally.

After Josiah Pongasi singled and was picked off in the top of the seventh, Krebs singled. He was replaced on the basepaths by Azevedo. Brandon Allen followed with a groundball and both runners were safe on the fielder’s choice. Terek Been followed with a groundball that was misplayed, allowing Azevedo to score what turned out to be the winning run.

Carson scored two in the third, but the Panthers matched that in the bottom of the fourth, and that’s the way the score stayed until the fifth.

Carson went ahead 3-2 on a single by Seamus Burns, but North Valleys tied it in the sixth. Burns, playing centerfield, came up with a great throw to retire a runner at third base for the final out in the sixth.

“Kyle threw well,” CHS coach Bryan Manoukian said. “He battled. It was a pitch count thing. He also hit a clutch double to get us our first run.”

Pongasi and Burns contributed two hits apiece.

Douglas edges McQueen

RENO — Kaleb Foster hit 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and Hadyn Brown 2-for-4 with 2 RBI on Tuesday afternoon to help Douglas post a 4-1 Northern Division I victory against McQueen.

Douglas (2-11 conference, 4-14 overall) has won two of its last three games heading into a rematch game against McQueen (3-6, 7-8) Thursday in Minden.

Zac Davies also went 2-for-4 to help the Tigers, who scored once in the second inning and added two more runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Freshman Blake Murray started on the mound and pitched 5.1 innings to pick up the win. Murray allowed one run on four hits to go with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Tanner Valenzuela came out of the bullpen to pitch 1.2 scoreless innings and earn credit for the save. The junior left-hander allowed two hits, struck out 3 and walked 1.

South Tahoe pounds Dayton

LAKE TAHOE — The Vikings struck for eight second-inning runs en route to a 14-3 win over Dayton in a Northern Division 1A game.

D.J. Baker drove in two runs with a double and Michael Selmi drove in a run with a fielder’s choice.

“I give South Tahoe credit,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “They are playing really well right now. You have to play clean baseball to play with them, and we made too many mistakes. We needed to be healthy during this stretch, and right now we’re banged up.”

Gage Duke has a back injury, Marcos Saylor is ill and Baker can only DH because of a back injury. Jaret Reed suffered a shoulder injurry and came out in the third inning.

Trevor Burrows led Dayton with two hits.

Carson golfers finish third

RENO — Led by Dalton Butler’s second-place finish, Carson High took third at the recent Sierra League tournament at Lakeridge Golf Club on Monday afternoon.

Butler shot a 3-over-par 74, two shots behind Manogue’s Steve Osbourne. Manogue won with a 378 followed by Galena at 425, Carson 455, Douglas 467, Damonte 510 and Wooster 568.

Jake Jones had 95, Bebop Martinez 91, Matt McCarthy 98, Lakoda Smokey 97 and Casey Stevens 120.

“Overall, the team is struggling to cut strokes off their scores,” CHS coach Rod Butler said.

“Their short games need focus, They are giving up a lot of strokes to hit two or three chip shots to get on a green and they are three-putting from short range. We’re looking at ways to improve in those areas with regionals a few weeks away.”
