CHS wrestlers win 3rd championship

SAN ANSELMO, Calif. — Carson High’s wrestling team won its third championship of the season, racking up the team title at the 2nd annual Chris Snowden Memorial Tournament at Sir Francis Drake High School on Saturday.

Carson, which won its own tourney and the Granada Invitational, finished with 262 points, 82 points ahead of its nearest competitor.

The Senators placed nine wrestlers in the finals, and seven came away with titles.

Brandon Basa (106, 3-0), Dom Kinder (126, 3-0), Kyle Sharp (132, 4-0), Nicholas Lani (138, 4-0), Brady O’Keefe (145, 4-0), Nolan Shine (152, 4-0) and Brady Rivera (182, 3-0) all came away with titles.

Sammy Mercado (113) injury defaulted in the finals, while Cody Cunningham (170) also lost in the finals. Austin Martinez was third at 120.

“The competition there was up and down,” said first-year head coach Paul Carter. “It was similar to the Granada tournament, maybe a little less competition wise.

“Nicholas Lani pinned his first three opponents and then won by technical fall in the finals. He had a great tournament.

“Nolan Shine also wrestled well. I think we’re starting to mesh as a team. We’re at Fernley next week, and that will be a tough tournament. All the teams in Northern Nevada will be there; Lowry, Spring Creek and Spanish Springs.”

Carter said he’s not sure about the severity of Mercado’s ankle injury, and whether he’ll be able to wrestle at Fernley.
