Johnathan Artz and Spencer Rodgers both walked away with individual titles at Saturday’s JV wrestling tournament at Morse Burley Gym.

Both wrestlers compiled perfect 3-0 marks, Artz at the 138-pound level and Rogers at the 120-pound mark.

“Artz showed a lot of heart,” Carson coach Paul Carter said. “The big thing in JV tournament is who makes the fewest mistakes and you don’t want to make a big mistake. Spencer is tough. He’s wrestled a couple of varsity tournaments and helped us tremendously,”

Artz’s win in the finals was especially impressive. He found himself trailing 5-0 in the first round, but battled back to a 5-all tie against his Spanish Springs opponent. The pair traded points until the waning seconds of the match when Artz was awarded two points which was enough for an 11-9 win.

Rogers’ victory was impressive, but didn’t have the drama of Artz’s win. Rogers rolled to an early 4-1 lead and ended up with a 9-3 victory.

The Senators had three wrestlers place second — Casey Stevens (106), Kevin Rusler (170) and Sheldon Miller (220). Grabbing third-place medals were Jake Roman (113), John Rowe (126), Alex Honeycutt (152), Corey Jasper (220). Alex Estrada (138) and Michael DeBaun (182) were fourth. DeBaun had the fastest pin of the day, collecting a 10-second fall.

No team scores were kept.
