Parks and rec classes for December

Douglas County Parks & Recreation offers activities and classes for children to seniors. Registration is required for all classes. Information at 1327 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville, or 782-9828.


Winter Wonderland. Kindergarten to sixth-graders make crafts, play games, watch holiday movies, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 4 at Carson Valley Middle School. Cost is $15. Sponsored by the Sierra Nevada Active 20-30 Club.


Happy Notes Music: Jingle all the way. Two- to 5-year-olds tap, sing and play to holiday tunes. Class is 9:15-10 a.m. Wednesdays Dec. 1-15, or 4-4:45 p.m. Thursdays Dec. 2-16. Cost is $30.


Renaissance swordsmanship. Students 13 and older learn the basic techniques of swordsmanship, 7-8:30 p.m. Mondays or Wednesdays. Cost, $30.


Concealed weapon certification. Course meets and exceeds Nevada State concealed weapon certification requirements for handguns. Class is 6-9:30 p.m. Dec. 15 and Dec. 17 at the recreation annex, and 8-11 a.m. Dec. 18 at the Douglas County Shooting Range. Cost is $90 plus a $10 insurance fee. Spouses are half price.


Scrap booking. All day crop with instructor Jackie Gordon, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 11, at the Extension Office. Tools available. Cost of $10 includes snack and water.


Beginning tai chi. Warm-ups, exercises and repetitions, Saturdays at Gardnerville Elementary School. Cost, $5 a month.


Yoga focuses on the body, mind and spirit with concentration on control, stretching and breathing. Class is 9:30-11 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays, Dec. 2-30, at the recreation annex building. Cost, $40.


Natural health approaches. Receive a complete personal health evaluation and learn natural ways to support and heal your body with foods, herbs, supplements and remedies. Class is 1-2 p.m. Tuesdays, Dec. 7-28, at the recreation annex building. Cost, $40.


Introduction to avalanches. The 12-hour certificate course includes introduction to avalanche terminology, statistic, human factors, weather factors, beacon use, shoveling, 6-9 p.m. Dec. 13 and 14 at the recreation annex building, and Dec. 18 at Hope Valley. Cost is $25.


Dog obedience. Establish good conduct and curb bad habits in a dog obedience class by instructor Guy Yeaman, Wednesdays, Dec. 29-Feb. 2, at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Building. Teach your dog to obey the commands heal, sit, stand, stay and recall. Dogs must be at least 4 months old, have a choke chain and fabric or leather lead. Cost is $80.
