Museum plans events for Pony Express re-ride

Thanks are in order for all the great Douglas County Historical Society volunteers who never let us down. The Barn Tour ran smoothly and everyone enjoyed themselves, thanks to our volunteers. Thanks are also due to our barn owners; without them there would be nothing to tour.

May is winding down and the May photo contest ends Monday afternoon. Submit your winning photo either directly at the Gardnerville museum or by e-mail to the address below. We'll announce our winner in the June 4 edition of this column.

With the start of June comes the annual Pony Express Re-ride. This is the 150-year anniversary of the Pony Express and events and celebrations are taking place all along the route. Genoa's first celebration is June 5, with Student-Senior Day at the Genoa Courthouse Museum. Pony Express Re-riders Mike Moore and Bob Moore with his horse Casey will be on hand to talk about the re-rides and all the events planned for this year.

On Student-Senior Day, admission is free for all seniors and students accompanied by an adult. Bob Moore and Casey will be at the museum at 11 a.m. and Mike Murphy will be there at 1 p.m. This event isn't limited to the little kids. We big kids love the history and lore tied to our Pony Express.

The actual re-ride will arrive in Genoa on Tuesday evening, June 8 at approximately 6:30 p.m. Three DCHS members and re-ride veterans are scheduled along the route from Fredericksburg Road to New Kingsbury Grade. Mike Murphy starts the re-ride at Fredericksburg Road at 4:45 p.m. Bob Moore will take over at 5 p.m. and Carl Malkmus will take over the re-ride at 5:25 p.m. Station yourself along the route and cheer for our re-riders.

Other upcoming June events include the annual Young Chautauquans in the Park, 5 p.m. June 16, in Mormon Station State Historical Park in Genoa. This will be our first chance to see these kids after their many weeks of preparation to portray historical characters. Come see the performance and bring a picnic supper for the whole family to enjoy. Admission is free.

Saturday, June 19, will be our one and only flea market this summer. Booth space is $10 and there is space still available. Call 782-2555 to reserve your space soon. Come on out to either sell or buy or both. Main Street Gardnerville will be having a business sidewalk sale the same day. Don't miss the fun.

Contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
