Saturday is student-senior day at museums

We have a magnificent May photo contest winner. In keeping with May as Historic Preservation Month, Kathy Port went on this year's Douglas County Historical Society's Barn Tour and took this photo of the Herbig barn, entitled "Grand Barn." Congratulations, Kathy, and thank you for such a great photo.

The June photo contest is open and Carson Valley Days are coming with many great photo opportunities. Hope to see your winning photo by June 30.

Saturday is Student-Senior Day at the Genoa Courthouse Museum. In honor of the Pony Express, re-riders Mike Murphy and Bob Moore will be at the museum at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to tell you all about this year's historic re-ride. Bob will have his horse Casey with him, so come see a genuine Pony Express re-ride horse as well.

Last week we noted that three of our DCHS members and re-ride veterans would be riding in the actual 150-year anniversary re-ride Tuesday. They are scheduled along the route from Fredericksburg Road to New Kingsbury Grade. Mike Murphy starts the re-ride at Fredericksburg Road at 4:45 p.m. Bob Moore will take over at 5 p.m. and Carl Malkmus will take over the re-ride at 5:25 p.m. But it gets better.

This week we received an e-mail from a reader who lives along the route on Fredericksburg Road. She said, "Just read your article about the re-ride and wanted to let you know how it inspired my granddaughters to participate and support the history of the Pony Express. They are 8 and 6 (Nicole and Ashlee). The girls want to set up a lemonade stand, as well as paint rocks depicting the Pony Express days. I suggested that the money they made on the sale of lemonade and painted rocks could be donated to support the historical society and they thought that was a great idea."

The girls will set up their lemonade stand at Mormon Station State Historic Park on Tuesday. Now we have no excuse not to go to their lemonade stand and support those young girls as well as the Pony Express re-ride and our local museums.

If you have a camera, bring it along and take what could be the June contest winning photo. Thank you, Nicole and Ashlee, for being such enterprising young ladies. I hope Grandma will take you to the Genoa Courthouse Museum to meet our re-riders in person.

June 10 is the next date in the continuing lecture series at the Gardnerville museum. Frank Ackerman will be talking about railroads in Nevada. Mr. Ackerman will speak about the history of railroads in Nevada including the Virginia and Truckee, moving gold and silver from mines to shipping areas, train robberies, etc. The lecture starts at 7 p.m. and is free for DCHS members, $3 per person for non-members.

Contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
