One more day to enter May photo contest

You have one more day to enter your favorite photo of May in Douglas County into the May photo contest. There were so many of you at the barn tour, I'm expecting great photos. Lately it seems that our barn tour officially represents May in our Valley.

As a part of this year's barn tour we raffled off a beautiful photo of the Trimmer barn with Ken Gardner's poem superimposed on it. The raffle was held during the ice cream social at the Gardnerville museum. Congratulations to our winner Mary Stephans. Thanks to all who participated in the raffle.

Thank-yous are due to all those who participated in this year's very successful barn tour. Thanks to all the barn owners who graciously opened up their barns to the public. Thanks to all those who helped by directing traffic, checking tickets, giving barn history and serving ice cream at the social. A special thanks to Paul Oatman who generously gives of his barn knowledge and Tahoe Creamery for the delicious ice cream.

June 6 is Student-Senior Day at the Gardnerville museum. This one is a must for you Pony Express fans. At 11 a.m. only Bob Moore and Mike Murphy, two Pony Express re-riders, will be at the museum. Bob will have his horse Casey with him. Casey is a 5-year-old mustang and a veteran of the Pony Express re-rides.

The next lecture in our series will be on June 11 at 7 p.m. at the Gardnerville museum. It will feature Frankye Craig speaking about the Donner Party. Ms. Craig is the author of three books and a Donner historian. Beginning with this lecture, there will be a $3 charge for all non-members. Historical society members will be admitted for free.

The Douglas County Young Chautauquans will be performing June 17 at 5 p.m. at Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa. Some of the historical people you will meet are Anne Frank, Walter Knott, Marie Antoinette, Nellie Taylor Ross, Annie Oakley and Lucille Ball.  This is a great outing for the whole family. Bring a picnic supper, enjoy the park and learn a bit about history. Admission is free. Young Chautauqua is funded in part by Nevada Humanities.

The Douglas County Historical Society will be holding their swap meets June 20 and 27 in the Gardnerville museum parking lot again this summer. Booth spaces are $10 for a 10- x 10-foot space, paid in advance or $20 paid the day of the meet. Hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come make a day of it, buying or selling.

If you have any questions about anything mentioned here, please call the Douglas County Historical Society at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555.
