DHS speech and debate wraps up last league tourney with big wins

The Douglas High speech and debate team competed at their last league tournament of the year March 5-6 at Elko High School, and the Tigers continued to win big in the top events.

The final round of Lincoln-Douglas debate was closed out by Kevin Kendrick and Daniel Armburst. Douglas additionally sent a competitor to every final round of debate. In addition to some big wins in events, as a school the team won several sweepstakes awards. In an accumulation of all the points won throughout the year, Douglas High walked away with 11 sweepstakes awards, some of the biggest being second place in individual events, second place grand sweepstakes, second place policy, and first place Lincoln Douglas.

Seventeen schools from Northern Nevada competed in five speech events and three debate events.

The following students from Douglas High received awards for the March 6 debate events: Will Dornbrook and Evan Kleiner won second place in senior policy; Nicole Romaneschi and Roy Dornbrook won third place in senior policy; Kevin Kendrick and Daniel Armburst won first and second place in senior Lincoln-Douglas; Megan Frost won third place in senior Lincoln-Douglas; Sedona Schat and Molly Ellery took second in senior public forum debate; and Noah O'Connor and Kaitlin Barger took third place in senior public forum debate.

Additionally, the following students from Douglas High received awards for their speaking events on March 5: Nicole Romaneschi won second place in senior expository speaking; Megan Frost won fourth place in senior expository speaking; Kevin Kendrick won second place in senior storytelling; Evan Kleiner won third place in senior domestic extemporaneous; Will Dornbrook won fifth place in novice domestic extemporaneous; and Daniel Armburst won sixth place in senior domestic extemporaneous.

The sweepstakes awards won by the team for the year are as follows: second place impromptu speaking; first place expository speaking; third place original oratory; third place humorous interpretation; third place storytelling; second place domestic extemporaneous; third place grand individual events; second place speaker points; second place public forum debate; first place Lincoln-Douglas debate; second place policy debate; and second place grand sweepstakes.

Students from Carson Valley Middle School also won two sweepstakes awards, third place policy debate and third place foreign extemporaneous, and performed well receiving the following awards: Taylor Hubbard won second place in novice Lincoln-Douglas; and Joel Kaufman won second place in novice domestic extemporaneous.

The team is attended the state tournament this weekend at Carson High School. The last tournament of the year will be Districts, the National Qualifier on April 15-17.
