Douglas High speech and debate keeps up winning streak

The Douglas High Speech and Debate Team continued their winning streak at the second debate tournament of the season Oct. 23-24 at Reno High School.

Douglas brought several fierce competitors to Reno, Douglas' biggest rival.

One of the largest events of the night left the two competitors in the final round of Lincoln Douglas debate both from Douglas High School. Kevin Kendrick took first, leaving him with first in both of the year's two tournaments thus far.

The competition left Douglas keeping a commanding lead as the second best school in the Northern Nevada Forensic league.

Fifteen schools from all over Northern Nevada competed in five speech events and three debate events.

The following students from Douglas High School received awards for the Oct. 24 debate events: Kevin Kendrick, first place, senior Lincoln Douglas debate;

Megan Frost, second place, senior Lincoln Douglas debate, as well as best speaker for Lincoln Douglas; Noah O'Conner and Evan Kleiner, second place, senior public forum debate, with Kleiner winning best speaker for public forum debate.

Additionally, the following students from Douglas High School received awards for their speaking events on Oct. 23: Megan Frost, first place, senior expository speaking; Kevin Kendrick, first place, senior storytelling; Will Dornbrook, fourth place, senior domestic extemporaneous; Evan Kleiner, fifth place, senior domestic extemporaneous; Roy Dornbrook, first place, novice domestic extemporaneous; Daniel Armburst, second place, novice domestic extemporaneous.

The freshmen competitors from Carson Valley Middle School also continued their great start to the season. The following are the awards won by CVMS students: Mac Cronin and Joel Kaufmann, first place, novice policy; Bailey Gumm and Emily Hales, second place, novice policy, with Hales taking best speaker for novice policy; Joel Kaufmann, fourth place, novice domestic extemporaneous; Bailey Gumm and Emily Hales, fourth place, novice duo interpretation; Evan Stokes and Kevin Kauffman, fifth place, novice duo Interpretation.

The speech and debate team will have its next league tournament Nov. 20 to 21 at McQueen High School, followed shortly by the team traveling to compete at the Dempsey-Cronin Invitational Tournament at Santa Clara University, Calif., in early December.
