Whittell, Douglas seniors receive scholarships

Maria DeJesus Gutierrez-Garcia, a 2010 graduating senior from Douglas High School, and Lauren Alyssa Andrew, a graduate of George Whittell High School, each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Douglas County Democratic Women's group in May.

Gutierrez-Garcia will attend the University of Nevada, Reno to pursue her nursing and physician's assistant requirements. Maria achieved a cumulative grade point average (weighted) of 3.326. She worked throughout her four years at DHS to assist her family.

Gutierrez-Garcia participated on the track and swim teams, and her community service activities included Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Safe School Ambassador, among others.

Andrew plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno, to pursue a career in health sciences and premedicine. Her cumulative GPA (weighted) was 4.306. Andrew participated in varsity volleyball, basketball and track teams, played in the school band and sang alto in the Black and White Choir.

She volunteered for the Caps for Kids program, worked with elderly patients in a skilled nursing facility, was a member of the Key Club, and took part in other service projects as needed.
