Baseball: Two WNC products taken in MLB draft

The Western Nevada College baseball team is once again sending players into the Major League Baseball draft. One current player and one former player each got the call Tuesday in Day 2 of the 2010 draft.

Former Wildcats third baseman Lance Ray, who excelled at the University of Kentucky this year as a junior, was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the eighth round. A few hours later, WNC freshman pitcher Dillon Nuernberg was chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 23rd round.

Head Coach DJ Whittemore said he wasn't surprised by either player's success.

"Lance played in right field as well as first base for the nationally ranked Wildcats and was hitting in the cleanup spot, in the exceptionally tough Southeastern Conference," he said. "Lance is really amazing," the coach continued. "His work ethic and character are really motivating to me. I couldn't be prouder."

Nuernberg, he said, "has trees for legs and a rocket for a right arm," throwing in the mid-90 mph range this spring. Whittemore said he would not be surprised if the freshman signs with the Cardinals and begins his professional career. "I'm just thankful for the contribution he made to our team this year, and wish him all the best."

In a telephone call, Ray said he will likely either sign with the Twins and head for the minor leagues, or play summer ball in the Cape Cod League and return to Kentucky for his senior year. Either way, he said, "It's so exciting."

Ray said he was thankful for the time he spent at WNC, and when asked what advice he would offer current high school or WNC players, said "Work hard on the field and hard in class. Work to get better every day."
