100 soldiers headed to Haiti on Thursday

More than 100 soldiers from multiple Nevada Army National Guard units are set to depart on a mission to Haiti on Thursday to assist with humanitarian and security efforts for about two weeks as the Caribbean country continues to recover from its massive January earthquake.

The 485th Military Police Company in Reno is set to send about 90 of its soldiers. They will be joined by about 10 soldiers from 72nd Military Police Company headquartered in Las Vegas, about 15 Soldiers from the 609th Engineer

Company from Fallon, and about a half dozen Soldiers from the 593rd Transportation Company located in Reno.

The Nevada National Guard units will assist in the security of U.S. personnel, facilities and equipment during the deployment, including medical and civil engineering personnel.

The soldiers are a portion of the 500 National Guard soldiers announced by U.S. Southern Command set to assist in humanitarian assistance projects in Haiti through September.
