August means Taste of Towns

Photos are starting to come for the July photo contest. We have some great ones, but we don't have yours yet. Send your winning photo to the e-mail address below or deliver a photograph to the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville by July 31. We will announce the winner Aug. 6.

Got your tickets for our Aug. 7 Taste of the Towns? This is the big event of the summer and you won't want to miss out. We meet at the Gardnerville museum parking lot at about 5 p.m. for a look at the various booths and to set course for the walking portion of the evening. Either direction on Main Street, you will find delectable items to eat and drink and shops to visit.

The restaurants ready to tickle your palate this year include Overland Hotel and Basque Restaurant, JT Basque Bar & Dining Room, Sharkey's Casino, Two Guys from Italy, Cafe Girasole, Port of Subs, Papa Murphy's, Nevada Margarita Man, Tahoe Ridge Winery & Bistro, Bella Vita Catering, Sugarplum Bakery and Treats, and Doppelgangers.  There isn't one of those restaurants that doesn't serve excellent food.

Want to shop a bit between munching? Stop by Cheshire Antiques, Ruby Rose City and Saddle Clothes and Country Carousel/CJS Floors on the walking tour and Whiskers & Paws Catering and AR Jewell Enterprises in our parking lot.

We're offering music for listening and probably dancing pleasure at two locations. Ben Crocker will be at the Gardnerville museum parking lot and Mike Maloney will be at the JT. Call 782-2555 for your tickets to the best night of the whole summer.

There are big things happening out at the Dangberg Home Ranch State Historic Park this summer. Former Nevada State Treasurer Patty Cafferata will be at the ranch 10 a.m. Saturday. Call Park Interpreter Mark Jensen at 783-9417 for more information and reserved tickets. Admission is only $3 for adults with children under 13 free.

Enjoy surfing the Web? Come visit us on Facebook and check out what's new. On Facebook, search for Douglas County Historical Society. When the results of that search come up, click on "others" to bring up all the DCHS's in the country. (Douglas is a popular county name.) You'll recognize us by the photo of the Gardnerville museum and sign. After the first time you find us, we'll come up as first choice for your subsequent searches. Stop by often and post your comments on our wall.

Information about the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
