Historical society plans Sept. 11 flea market

Time is flying by and so is summer. If you haven't taken your camera out and hunted for that perfect July in Douglas County photo, perhaps you'd best do it soon. July will be over in a couple weeks and so will the July photo contest. Remember, you can't win the photo contest if you don't enter it.

Last week we just mentioned that there might be another flea market this summer and we asked to you contact the museum to register your support. Several of you must have because there will indeed be another flea market this year. It is currently scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. While it may seem early to make booth space reservations, it isn't too early to start planning on your participation. And, first come, first served. If there is a special booth space you would really like, call 782-2555 and reserve it today.

Have you bought your tickets yet for the upcoming Taste of the Towns? How about you Thrivent members? Thrivent is a major sponsor of the Taste of the Towns and this is a major social event for all Douglas-Alpine County Thrivent members. This year Thrivent members get discounted tickets, thanks to your Thrivent board. A $25 ticket is only $20 for every Thrivent member as well as for Douglas County Historical Society members.

This event is not only for Thrivent members and DCHS members, but for everyone who likes good food. This is your best chance to sample all the great food our local restaurants have to offer and to see what's in those shops on Main Street. You know, the ones that we all drive past because we haven't the time to stop. Well, this is our chance to see the shops, taste the food and enjoy our neighbors.

The Taste is 5-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7. You can walk to the closer local restaurants or just stay in the museum parking lot and visit the booths of other restaurants. As usual, there will be music. Ben Crocker will be at the museum parking lot and Mike Maloney will be at the JT. And where there is music, there is usually dancing. You really don't want to miss this one.

Tickets are on sale now at the Gardnerville museum for $25 per person, or $20 for those who are Thrivent or DCHS members. Tickets may be charged by phone at 782-2555. Thrivent members, check your Sunday church bulletin or call 790-1565 for your tickets. Be sure to wear comfy shoes and bring your appetite.

A reminder to you faithful DCHS supporters that we are on Facebook. Sign in to check out all the goings on. And we still offer you www.Ancestery.com for free at the Gardnerville museum. Come on in and research your family tree. We're open 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily except Sunday.

Contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
