Slushy Saturday makes for treacherous driving

Emergency personnel handled two injury accidents in Carson Valley before 8 a.m. today.

Roads are slick as warmer temperatures and light rain turned as much as a foot of snow into mush.

The first accident occurred at 7:40 a.m. at Muller and Highway 395 where a vehicle ran into a guardrail. The driver of the vehicle was taken for medical treatment.

A second incident where a vehicle struck a fence along Mottsville Lane near Foothill Road resulted in one person being taken to Carson Valley Medical Center.

A foot of snow fell in the foothills of Carson Valley on Friday, according a National Weather Service trained spotter.

When the snow stopped around 11 p.m. Friday, temperatures began to warm up to above freezing starting the melt-off.

By this morning the temperature was 40 degrees in Genoa and puddles of water began to form in the snow.

A high wind advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. today. Winds with gusts of up to 70 mph could damage trees and powerlines, prompting outages in the region.

As of 8:30 a.m., rain was falling at .2 inches an hour in Minden under cloudy skies. The temperature is 40 degrees. Flooding so far has been limited to areas with poor drainage like the intersection of Highway 395 and 88 in Minden. The wind has been between 10 and 20 mph.

The forecast calls for rain and snow showers with a high temperature of 51 degrees.
