Douglas speech and debate gets big wins

Douglas High School speech and debate continued to pave the way to victory at their third tournament of the year, which took place at Reno High School on Nov. 17-18.

The tournament saw a multitude of impressive wins for not only the high school but the two Valley middle schools as well.

In speech events, the team started with a bang with team captains Nicole Romaneschi taking first in senior expository and Megan Frost taking first in senior storytelling.  Molly Ellery took fifth place in senior domestic extemporaneous.

From Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School, freshman Trent DeGiovani took first in novice storytelling with Grant Dunkelman taking fifth in the same event. Katelin Teigan and Jocelyn Contreras from Carson Valley Middle School took fourth in novice duo interpretation.

The debate events held even bigger wins for the team. Again, Romaneschi and Frost plowed through their competition in senior Lincoln-Douglas debate. Romaneschi placed first, and Frost placed third.

Public forum debate held big wins with Ellery and Abby Chitwood placing first in the senior division and Roy Dornbrook and Kaity Barger placing third.

In the novice division, freshmen DeGiovani and Jerad Morgan from Pau-Wa-Lu placed third in novice public forum debate, and Conor McKay and Savannah Halow placed first.

Awards for best speakers also proved promising as Frost received first for senior Lincoln-Douglas, and Ellery and Barger had an unbreakable tie for first in senior public forum. DeGiovani also received first place in novice public forum debate.

The next tournament of the year will be at Douglas High on Jan. 7-8. Anyone interested in judging should contact coach Paul Mileo at mileop@gmail.com.
