Volleyball: 'MVP' Tigers race to Las Vegas Invitational crown

Usually, it's "coach-speak" when an entire team is called the most valuable player.

But not when it comes from outside sources.

The entire Douglas High School volleyball team was named the Las Vegas Invitational Most Valuable Player over the weekend.

And why not?

Douglas went 8-0 in match play without losing a single game (14-0, minus the championship final against Westlake, Calif., which Westlake forfeited) on its way to its second title at the tournament in three years.

Douglas opened the tournament with a 25-11, 25-21 win over Foothill, followed by wins over Sierra Vista (25-19, 25-22), Rancho (25-9, 25-16) and Buhach Colony (25-21, 25-12) in pool play.

In bracket play, Douglas beat Golden Valley 25-10, 25-13 and topped rival Carson in the quarterfinals 25-13, 25-19.

Douglas beat Coronado 25-14, 25-22 in the semifinals to advance to the finals, where they were awarded the trophy after Westlake had to catch its flight home.

Seniors Jackie Harper and Mia Townsell made the all-tournament team for Douglas, but tournament organizers gave the MVP award the Tigers' roster.

"They all stood out during the tournament and the officials recognized that," Douglas coach Suzi Townsell said.

Brenna White had 39 kills to go with eight blocks, 19 digs, an assist, 36 service points and nine aces.

Shannon Dugan was equally impressive with 45 kills, 12 blocks, 32 digs, an assist, 18 service points and an ace.

Emily Garcia led Dogulas with 28 blocks in the tournament to go with 21 kills and an ace.

Keely Latham has 21 kills and 12 blocks and Erin Allison had 17 kills and 13 blocks.

Mia Townsell had 70 digs to go with 47 service points and six aces while Harper had 68 assists, 48 service points, 11 aces and 14 digs.

Hailey Sclafani had 59 assists to go with 39 service points and 16 aces to round out a solid tournament from Douglas' starting rotation.

Carly McCullough had seven kills and eight blocks, DanI Trujillo had six kills, Savannah Wood had four kills and four blocks, Heidi Schefcik had two kills and three digs, Amanda Wartgow had three kills and three blocks and Cassi Uhart had two kills and two digs to go with six service points and two aces.
