Doctor jailed in alleged $110,000 gambling debt

Bail was set at $110,000 for a 63-year-old Texas doctor jailed in Douglas County on Aug. 12 over a three-year-old gambling debt.

Robert O. Powell of Desoto, Texas, was taken into custody on 14 theft charges out of Tahoe Township. He was to appear Tuesday in Tahoe Township Justice Court.

According to reports, on July 26, 2007, Harrah's Lake Tahoe submitted 14 markers totaling $110,000 for investigation and criminal prosecution. The markers were written on Jan. 22, 2007, the account was closed on Feb. 5, 2007, and the markers were deposited on April 7, 2007.

A demand for payment letter was sent by certified and regular mail to Powell at his Texas address and signed for July 26, 2007. The letter sent by regular mail was not returned.

There was no communication from Powell, according to reports.

A warrant was issued for Powell's arrest on Aug. 8, 2007.

He was arrested in Orange, Texas, on an outstanding Douglas County warrant.
