It happened last weekend at the Nevada State 4-H camp. Girls Scouts from local areas were invited to participate. Johnson Lane Troop 453 were there with their cute green vests, sleeping bags and duffle bags with camping gear all ready for a weekend full of adventure.
Friday night when the girls arrived they started with cabin assignments. Then they loaded their supplies in wagons and pulled them to their cabin to set up their bunks. Next was the flag ceremony which was also done each morning and evening until Sunday when it was time to go home. They all said the Pledge of Allegiance and then any troop could also do a little unique ceremony. Some sang short songs or short skits.
Dinner was next and included salad, chips and salsa, tacos, fruit and a type of tacos filled with ice cream for dessert. There was time for a few games but lights went out at 10 p.m.
Saturday after a buffet breakfast the girls tie-dyed T-shirts and socks. They learned how to erect large tents and they got to spray water balloons. It was time to put on their swimsuits and walk down to the lake. Next, it was time for a quick jump off the pier for those girls brave enough to jump right in the brisk Lake Tahoe water.
Troop 453 got to serve the lunch where the girls made their own sandwich out of a variety of supplies. The rest of the day was filled with lots of card and other games until it was time for a pizza dinner. A campfire in the evening and what camp out wouldn't be complete without s'mores?
Sunday morning was the last flag ceremony and some field events to finish the swaps craft project the girls made before the camp out and pinned to their hats to swap with other girls. Troop 453 had a few very creative ones including a small strip of white felt hot-glued onto a short straw and rolled around. Then a wire was slipped in the straw and a pin glued to the back. It replicated a roll of toilet paper. One of the youngest girls took a red pom-pom and glued it to a small piece of wood, added black dots and two googly eyes like a lady bug. Another girl cut a tongue depressor and glued the pom-poms on it to resemble a caterpillar.
The camp out came to a close as the flag was lowered for the last time until next year. I know our Troop 453 from Johnson Lane had a great time.
