Check thief expected to enter guilty plea

A 33-year-old woman is to plead guilty May 17 in District Court to one count of uttering a forged instrument, admitting she cashed stolen checks in Douglas County.

Charity Rife is accused of cashing nearly $5,000 in bad checks during fall 2008.

She waived her right to a preliminary hearing in East Fork Justice Court on Wednesday.

She was recently released from Chowchilla Prison and returned to Douglas County in connection with similar charges in California. She is in jail on $50,000 bail.

Rife was identified after a bank photo of her cashing a stolen birthday check was posted online. Douglas deputies received a complaint that a $40 birthday check had been altered to $800.

Authorities believe she stole the check in Reno and cashed it in Minden.
