Red flag warning this afternoon

A combination of strong winds and low humidity has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a red flag warning 2-10 p.m. today.

According to the weather service, southwest winds of 30-35 mph will signal the approach of a strong cold front this afternoon.

High winds will be especially strong along Highway 395 and the Foothills. Dry conditions will persist ahead of the front with humidities in the 10-15 percent range.

According to the weather service, critical fire weather conditions will occur.

High winds will continue on Tuesday, with ridge gusts hitting 75 mph and gusts south of Interstate 80 hitting 45 mph.

Travel for motorhomes and other high profile vehicles will be difficult on both days. The deserts east of Dayton and Yerington will be plagued by blowing dust.

On the other side of the front, temperatures are expected to drop by as much as 35 degrees. Widespread freezes are expected Thursday morning in Western Nevada valleys. Peole with sensitive plants should move them indoors or write them off.

Snow levels are expected to drop to 6,000 feet on Wednesday, but there isn't much moisture associated with the storm. There is a possibility of showers on Tuesday night.
