Staff Reports

The Chorus of the Comstock presents the annual Shine On Harvest Moon barbershop quartet concert Sept. 12 at the Carson City Community Center.

Joining the 36-member a cappella Chorus of the Comstock on the program are the Summit from Albuquerque, Tahoe Blue from Reno, bluegrass band the Bar BQ Boys and Milus Scruggs on ragtime piano.

The matinee is at 2 p.m. and the evening show is 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 and $15 and may be purchased at Comma Coffee, www.comstockchorus.org or 887-1854.

The Chorus of the Comstock provides singing Valentines and promotes barbershop singing in area schools with the Youth in Harmony program, where high school and middle school boys may attend a weekend Youth Harmony Camp in Pollock Pines in September.

The chorus' Educate the Educators program sponsors local music educators to attend seminars at Missouri Western State University through grants provided by Carson City and the Barbershop Harmony Society. Next year's goal is to sponsor six music educators to attend the barbershop harmony seminar.

The Chorus of the Comstock sponsored a vocal training workshop for barbershop singers on Aug. 29 in the Johnson Lane area made possible through grants received from the Nevada Arts Council.

Under the direction of Jim Crowley, the chorus is expected to reach 50 members by the end of the year. The chorus encourages men who enjoy singing and have the ability to harmonize for rehearsals, 7 p.m. Thursdays, at the Carson City Senior Center. Information at www.comstockchorus.org
