Barton Auxiliary holiday fair and cheese ball sale returns Nov. 8

The Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is hosting its annual Holiday Faire Nov. 8 in Grace Hall at St. Theresa Catholic Church from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For sale will be treasures that include jewelry, crystal, antiques and collectibles, pictures, linens, books, Christmas decorations, winter wear, vintage dolls, purses and more. Special guests include Santa and Mrs. Claus and lunch will be available.

All proceeds go to Barton Memorial Hospital. Through the year-round efforts of the auxiliary, medical equipment is purchased with proceeds from the fair, The Attic thrift store, the hospital's gift shop and other fundraising ventures.

The auxiliary's famous cheese balls will also be available at the fair, as well as other locations. The cheese balls have been a South Lake Tahoe tradition that began in 1989 by auxiliary member Fern Riley. The first year, Riley's volunteers made 80 cheese balls. She handled the chairmanship for 14 years then too a break, but cheese ball fans clambered for the auxiliary to make them again.

For the last few years, Pearl Parks has been the cheese ball chair. Under her direction, 1,504 cheese balls have been assembled since August in the Barton Hospital Mountain Cafe by auxiliary volunteers and hospital staff volunteers. The cheese balls are $7.50, can be frozen until the night before serving, and are great hors d'oeuvres served with crackers.

In addition to sales at the Holiday Faire, cheese balls will be for sale for $7.50 at:

• Barton Memorial Hospital Snowflake Lobby, Nov. 10, 10 a.m.

• Carson Valley Medical Center front lobby, Nov. 12, 10 a.m.

• Festival of Trees & Lights, MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, Dec. 4-6
