Main st for 10-19

Thank you for your support of our September photo contest winner. Feedback has been great. The September winners' photos are on display at the main desk of the Carson Valley Museum in Gardnerville. Stop by and see the winning photo as well as the two runners-up. All three are very good and truly express September in Douglas County.

September winner Virginia Henningsen is already a member of DCHS and will receive a one year extension to her current membership. Runners-up receive our gratitude and an invitation to enter again this month. Winning and runner-up photos will be in the 2009 calendar.

If you are not a member but would like to be, you can do one of two things. You can come into the Carson Valley Museum in Gardnerville and join - we'd love to have you. Or, you can take a photo of what October in Douglas County means to you and enter the October photo contest. Who knows? You could be the one who wins the contest and a one year membership in the Douglas County Historical Society.

Again, the October contest is open to all in Douglas County and ends Oct. 31. Bring in your original photo of what October in Douglas County means to you and enter soon.

Tonight, Saturday and Sunday are the dates for the Haunted Weekend Ghost Walks. Tonight is the Haunted Gardnerville Ghost Walk, Saturday night is the Mottsville Cemetery Tour and Sunday morning is the Haunted Genoa Ghost Walk. The highlight of all these events is your chance to hear Douglas County history from ghosts representing those who lived here back when it was founded. Tickets are $5 per person per event and will be available at each venue if there are any left unsold.

With the holidays coming up, the Carson Valley Museum in Gardnerville is gearing up for lots of gala events. Nov. 17 is the first date to remember. That is the deadline for reserving a tree to decorate for the 11th annual Gallery of Trees. The trees will be set up at the end of November and will remain in the museum for the entire month of December. Visitors will be encouraged to vote for the best tree. The winner will be featured in The Record-Courier.

Saturday, Dec. 1, is another date to remember. Not only is that Saturday Student Day, but on the front lawn of the museum will be a full-size sled and Santa Claus. We will have photographers available to take pictures of your kids with Santa and will print the photos on the spot. Cost should be around $5 per photo.

Dec. 2 is the next date to mark on the calendar, starting with the annual cookie walk. The whole community is invited to attend. Purchase a can and pick out whichever cookies you want to take home for the holidays. Much better than spending hours in the kitchen baking, don't you think? Come early as we always sell out. Doors open 10 a.m.

Later that afternoon is the annual gala tea. This year's theme is the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Anyone can purchase a table and decorate it however they wish. Tables are $100 each and available at the Gardnerville museum or by calling 782-2555. Reserve soon as the tables always sell out early.

Check back here next week for more upcoming events and exhibits.
