Photo winner announced

Thank you, Douglas County shutterbugs! We have a winner for the September photo contest. And that means we have a start for the 2010 Douglas County Historical Society calendar. Congratulations to Maggie Rusmisel for her winning September sunrise shot and to runner-up Chris Banker. Come to the front desk of the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville to see the September 2010 calendar pages now on display.

The October photo contest will end Oct. 31 " Nevada Day and Halloween. You have a ton of choices for photos for this month. Head out there, take the winning photo and send it in.

Student-Senior Day is Saturday. We are presenting "A Day in the Museum" loosely based on the movie, "A Night in the Museum." We have living history characters in some of the exhibits, such as Dr. Eliza Cook, a telephone operator and a store clerk. These exhibits will come alive at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. Admission for students and seniors is free.

The lecture series continues Oct. 9 with a panel discussion of the various haunted sights around town. Ghosts have been thought to inhabit the old Gardnerville hospital, the CVIC Hall in Minden and various other locations around town. Experts will tell you of some of their experiences. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.

This year's Ghost Walk weekend will present historical characters at several locations. You will learn a bit about the people and the history of the old Gardnerville Hospital, the CVIC Hall, Trinity Lutheran Church, the old Douglas High School building and a Minden home. There is more, but we don't want to spoil the fun.

Haunted Weekend is Oct. 24-26. Friday is the Haunted Gardnerville Ghost Walk with tours available from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday is the Haunted Garden Cemetery Tour with guided tours every 15 minutes between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday is the Haunted Genoa Ghost Walk with tours at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Call 782-2555 or 782-2893 for ticket prices and more information.

Save Dec. 7 for this year's holiday gala. We will have the cookie walk, the gallery of trees and Santa will be back for a photo with your favorite kids in the Hank Monk sleigh.
